News from Graduate School & Faculty of Social Sciences in Details
• Ascension holiday opening hours at Graduate School
The Graduate School office will be closed May 5-6 due to the Ascension holiday, and will reopen on Monday, May 9th.
• Thesis by Nielsen, Tobias on Words Matter in the Woods
Over the past decade, avoiding deforestation has become a central element of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The focal point of this has been the incentive-based mechanism of REDD+, which stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation. A key notion in REDD+ is to establish incentives for developing countries to reduce their forest-related carbon emissions by creating and recognizing a financial value for the carbon not emitted into the atmosphere. REDD+ has changed how tropical forests are managed, but has also been the source of much contestation. The effects of deforestation go beyond carbon emissions, leading some actors to argue that biodiversity or socioeconomic factors, and not carbon, should be the priority of managing deforestation. This thesis demonstrates that words, and the way we make sense of deforestation, matter. They matter because they prioritise certain underlying ideas, notions and understandings, while neglecting others. These, in turn, shape the way we approach deforestation!

• Conference Museums in Times of Migration and Mobility: Processes of Representation, Collaboration, Inclusion and Social Change
Migration has, across time, contributed to the development and reshaping of societies and urban spaces. Today, migration movements have become a global phenomenon, where the number of countries affected – socially, economically and culturally – by migration is continually increasing. As in past times, the reasons why people move are varied and often intertwined. Sometimes it is about people fleeing poverty, war, ethnic conflicts, environmental disasters or different forms of persecution – for example religious. However, people also move for other reasons, such as work and studies in other countries, or out of curiosity and a sense of adventure.

• The Geneva Challenge 2016
In 2016, the contest is to discuss The Challenges of Urbanisation.
The idea is to gather contributions that are both theoretically grounded and offer pragmatic solutions to a relevant international development problem stemming from an interdisciplinary collaboration between 3 to 5 enrolled master students from anywhere in the world.
They invite teams of students to:
identify a challenge stemming from urbanisation;
construct an interdisciplinary analysis on how it affects different aspects of development in a specific (but transposable) context;
propose innovation at the policy, practice, process or technology levels turning the challenge into development opportunity.
