Hi Garedew! You graduated from Development Studies in 2016. What have you been up to since your graduation?

Since graduating from Development Studies in 2016, I have been involved in various projects funded by OAK Foundation, UNICEF, USAID, Population Council, and PLAN International at Ethiopian Society of Sociologists (ESSSWA). I have held different positions including research assistant, project manager, research coordinator, communication and publication specialist, and Institutional Research Ethics Review Board (IRB) secretary from October 2016 to early 2020 at ESSSWA.

From early 2020 to the present day, I have been working as a project manager at OSSSREA for the '5S Ethiopia' project. This project focuses on neglected skin diseases and examines them from a social science perspective.

I am also involved in social and voluntary activities, including the Ethio-Swedish Alumni Networks (ESAN). I am a member of ESSSWA Research Review Board (ESSSWA-IRB) and provide professional services to society. Additionally, I am a member of different professional associations, including ESSSWA, CSA, JSA, and the Ethiopian Red Cross. I have also had the opportunity to participate in and present papers at various events, in countries such as Toronto (twice), Tokyo, Stockholm, Berlin, since my graduation.

You are currently working and residing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working as a project manager at the OSSSREA. What do you enjoy the most about your work? 

I find my current work at OSSREA, particularly with the 5S foundation work, very enjoyable. My colleagues, who are based in Ethiopia and the UK, are highly experienced and disciplined professionals, and I learn a lot from them. Additionally, the project I am currently working on has the potential to bring a meaningful impact on the lives of patients suffering from diseases and change the attitude towards stigma and discrimination related to the problem in the community.

How do you use the knowledge you gained in Development Studies in your current work?

Development Studies has taught me the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including community members, government officials, and other organisations. In my current work, I apply these skills to build partnerships and work collaboratively with different stakeholders to achieve our development goals.

The programme has equipped me with the knowledge of the historical, cultural, and social context of different regions and countries. This understanding helps me to design programmes that are culturally appropriate and sensitive to the local context.

Development Studies has taught me to take a holistic approach to development, considering social, economic, environmental, and political factors. In my current work, I apply this approach to understand the complex issues and challenges faced by communities and design programs that address their needs comprehensively.

The courses in Development Studies has inculcated in me a commitment to social justice and equity. In my current work, I strive to ensure that our programmes promote gender equality, disability, inclusion, and human rights.

Overall, the knowledge gained from Development Studies has been invaluable in my current work, enabling me to do my job effectively and efficiently that contribute to successful implementation of the project work which I am doing now.

You are also an active alumni ambassador for Lund University, establishing a formal Alumni Network in Ethiopia in 2016, called the Ethio Swedish Alumni Network. Can you tell us more about the network?

The Ethio-Swedish Alumni Network (ESAN) is an alumni network established for individuals who have studied or stayed in Sweden for long-term programmes or short courses. The network was founded in 2017 with the support of the Swedish Institute and the Swedish Embassy in Ethiopia. ESAN involves in various activities that engage alumni members and focus on promoting Sweden around the world while keeping alumni connected to Sweden.

I served as the first officially elected president of the alumni network and board member from 2017 to 2019. I am still an active member of the network, which has grown and engaged in various activities.

Do you have any advice to fellow alumni both within and outside of Sweden interested in staying connected with Lund University?

  • Yes I do! Lund University has an active alumni network that organises various events and activities. Joining the network will help them stay informed about the latest news and events related to the university.
  • Attend alumni events both in Sweden and abroad. These events provide an opportunity to connect with other alumni and stay updated on the latest developments at the university.
  • Follow Lund University's social media accounts to stay updated on the latest news and events. Fellow alumni can also connect with other alumni through these platforms.
  • Consider volunteering for alumni events or as a mentor to current students. This is a great way to give back to the university and stay connected with the community.
  • If possible, visit Lund and explore the campus and the city. This will help you stay connected to your alma mater and relive their memories of studying at Lund University.

What advice would you give to students looking to embark on a journey of lifelong learning?

  • Curiosity is the foundation of lifelong learning. Stay curious about the world around you, ask questions, and seek answers. Explore new ideas and perspectives to expand your knowledge and understanding.
  • Set specific, measurable, and achieveable goals for students learning journey. This will help them stay motivated and focused on their learning objectives.
  • Learning from diverse perspectives is essential for personal growth and development. Seek out opportunities to learn from people with different backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints.
  • Lifelong learning requires a commitment to continuous growth and development. 
  • Being open-minded is essential for lifelong learning. Be willing to challenge your own assumptions and beliefs, and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
  • Learning is not always easy, and it often involves facing challenges and obstacles. Embrace these challenges as opportunities for grwoth and learning. Do not be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them!

Overall, lifelong learning is a journey that requires curiosity, perserverance, and a commitment to growth and development. By embracing these principles, you can embark on a journey of lifelong learning that will enrich your life and contribute to your personal and professional success.
