News from Graduate School & Faculty of Social Sciences
Europe is currently facing an unprecedented wave of asylum seekers and migrants. At the present rate of daily arrivals, Sweden will be receiving the equivalent of Gothenburg per year, while Germany will be receiving the equivalent of greater Stockholm. Mass migration is rapidly changing the human landscape of Europe, straining the capacities of national welfare states and weakening the cohesion of the European Union. Some countries are opening their borders to the migrants, while others fence them off. Some people believe migration will make our societies, others believe it will break them.
This will be discussed in an upcoming Debate in Lund, where panelists will present and test the arguments of both positions. The debate will be live-streamed on Sydsvenskan, a Swedish newspaper site.

- Urban Resilience: Complexities and Possibilities
The Lund University Centre for Societal Resilience invites to a seminar exploring the notion of urban resilience from a diverse set of perspectives. Three lectures will shed light on the complexity of urban resilience, the connection(s) between urban resilience and urban risk management, and the link between resilience and myth when it comes to facing our most vehement fears.

- Panel: Gender, Entrepreneurship and Innovation
This event is designed to explore the various challenges and opportunities associated with university entrepreneurship and innovation from a gender perspective. The panel’s speakers will reflect on if and why changes are necessary, what changes have been introduced, the outcome of these changes, and what still needs to happen to improve gender equality. Invited speakers represent entrepreneurs and inventors, as well as university management and policy makers. The diversity of speakers will ensure there are opportunities for learning for all.
The event will conclude with an informal reception from 4.00 pm – 5.00 pm with opportunities for networking.

Research Seminar with Amanda Lagerkvist, Stockholm University
Amanda Lagerkvist is an Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies and Wallenberg Academy Fellow at the Department for Media Studies, and she is head of the research programme ”Existential Terrains: Memory and Meaning in Cultures of Connectivity” financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation and Stockholm University (2014-2018). - Seminar: Researching Sex Work in Sweden: Lessons from the Field
Isabelle Johansson & Petra Östergren are PhD candidates in Social Anthropology at Lund University
Researching sex work involves challenges on multiple levels. This is especially true in Sweden, where laws prohibiting sex work are closely related to Sweden’s self-understanding as a nation of equal rights, gender equality and humanitarian treatment of vulnerable groups. In this seminar, we discuss the challenges and lessons that can be learned by engaging in this controversial topic. We will highlight the differences between Petra’s long-term research interest in sex work policy, including the public debate, and Isabelle, who has recently entered the field without this kind of ‘baggage’.

- Seminar: Alexander Von Hagen-Jamar “Politics, History and State Making: The Pathways of State Capacity Diffusion”
Alexander Von Hagen-Jamar presents a paper on state capacity diffusion. Many theories of state-making argue that the development of state capacity in one state contributes to the development in another, through competition or diffusion.
We use statistical models to evaluate which, if any, relationships between states lead to this contagion of state capacity. We specify models within and across regions to test what conditions are necessary for these interdependencies to manifest.

- Seminar on Politics of Irrigation Reform in India
Professor Peter Mollinga from the Dept. of Development Studies at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Peter Mollinga's interests lie in water politics and understanding how different processes characterising neoliberalism (like privatisation, financialisation, re-regulation, corporatisation) play out in the water domain. In addition, he works on how different ‘technologies of power ‘ are deployed in these processes (like law, policy and rights; knowledge and ideas; markets and money; technology and landscapes).

- Social Innovation Summit: breakfast lectures open to the public
Social Innovation Summit is Sweden’s new meeting place for social innovation in the Nordic region. This is where entrepreneurs, changemakers, innovators, policymakers, investors and funders gather to find new innovative solutions to the most urgent societal challenges we are facing today.
During two days the conference will identify future topics, across all sectors and develop new knowledge about financing, collaboration, policy, research and design for social innovation. Participants will meet and explore interesting examples from those at the forefront of this field, experts from all over the world and attend a dynamic program with exciting and parallel tracks and themes that are up-to-date in Sweden as well as globally. Together we will create the conditions needed in order to find new, innovative solutions to the most urgent societal challenges we are facing today.
The breakfast lectures will be handled in Swedish, but the Summit is in English for two days.

- Fika without borders seminar on Afghanistan
The South Asian Student Association (SASA) organises the next edition of its informal Fika Without Borders South Asia series. This month the country in focus is Afghanistan. At the event, organized in collaboration with SASNET, our main speaker is Anders Fänge, one of Sweden's foremost experts on Afghanistan. He gives a talk entitled Afghanistan’s Classical Problem – A Functioning State speaking about Afghanistan’s history focusing on the problems which have been faced by different Afghan governments which have tried to build a state.

- Tapping the potential of global multi-stakeholder initiatives lessons from sustainable energy for all
Global multi-stakeholder initiatives involving public and private sector actors have been heralded as an innovative vehicle for mobilizing resources and expertise to promote the achievement of sustainable development goals.
Launched in 2011 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, the Sustainable Energy for All initiative is an effort to foster cooperation among governments, corporations and civil society to increase energy access, promote energy efficiency and foster renewable energy production. Its ambitious goals place the initiative at the crossroads of three significant global agendas: reducing poverty, mitigating climate change and promoting an energy transformation.
This seminar explores lessons from the early stages of SE4ALL, highlighting experiences related to supporting country-level cooperation in the development of sustainable energy sectors and expanding private sector engagement. It focuses on identifying what opportunities and challenges the initiative presents to national governments, donors, and other actors in promoting energy goals and what makes SE4ALL an attractive platform for private sector actors.

All scholars interested in South Asian studies are reminded that the call for papers for the 24th European Conference on South Asian Studies – ECSAS2016, taking place at the University of Warsaw (Poland) from 27 to 30 July 2016, closes at midnight GMT on Monday 30 November 2015. The biannual conference, organised by the European Association for South Asian Studies (EASAS) is this time hosted by the Faculty of Oriental Studies at University of Warsaw.

- Proposals invited for the CROP Poverty Research Prize 2015
The Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP) Bergen, Norway, in cooperation with Zed Books, seeks original, high-quality, alternative and critical academic manuscripts for the CROP International Studies in Poverty Prize 2015. Particularly works challenging the dominant thinking and knowledge about poverty in our world are welcomed. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2015.

- PhD position in South Asian/Indian Ocean History in Dresden, Germany
The Institute of History at the Dresden University of Technology has announced a PhD position in the field of nineteenth- and twentieth century extra-European history, with a particular focus on South Asian/Indian Ocean history. The position is a fixed term until 31 October 2017. Main responsibilities are the conception and implementation of a research project in the field of extra-European history and the cooperation in developing a research cluster in extra-European history. The closing date for applications is 2 December 2016.
