Fabian Estrada Quero

My internship
Fabian went back to his native country Mexico to undertake a full-term internship with an institution associated with the university in Puebla. He wanted to complement his academic studies with an experience of working with research on topics related to his studies; development, migration and human rights.

- I wanted to experience something new since I had spent many years doing academic studies already. I wanted to do something real and to experience topics from a different perspective.

Fabian was asked to gather material and do research on migration issues, information that later was put to use in the magazine the institute publishes every six months. He interviewed families of migrants to find out why people make the decision to leave and how this relates to their understanding of development.

Fabian found the internship by searching the internet for organizations he thought would be interesting for him to work with. He also asked around to see if anyone in his network of friends could give him advice on where to apply for internships.

He finally established contact with the institute who invited him to work on collecting research and providing background materials for the issue of their magazine that would focus on migration, development and human rights. Since Fabian would like to gain future employment as a researcher, he believes that the experience and contacts he now has with the institute will make his transition into working life an easier one.

- To do an internship is useful even if it’s a bad experience. I would recommend everyone to do one.
